Description

National Highways connects the country, but it is important that it does that in an environmentally sustainable way. There is clear direction from Government to move faster and be more ambitious regarding the environment, seeking not just to minimise environmental impact but actively enhance the environment. This is supported by stakeholder and public opinion. Delivering on the Company’s Net Zero carbon commitments, enhancing biodiversity and minimising the impact on communities and environmental receptors close to our network are key to successful delivery of our current investment plan (RIS2), and the development of future investment plans.

The Energy and Sustainability Team sits within the Estates and Facilities Management Team and is responsible for the delivery of our Corporate Carbon KPI and other key deliverables within the National Highways Net Zero Carbon Plan. The Energy and Sustainability Team was formed in 2019 but it’s role within National Highways has evolved, leading and developing projects across the estate which have delivered sizeable carbon savings. Some examples of the things achieved include progression of an estate greening programme, roll out of EV charging infrastructure and support towards an LED renewals project; all supporting delivery of the Net Zero Plan. The team collaborates closely with the Central Carbon Team who are part of the recently formed Environmental Sustainability Division. The creation of the division demonstrating the importance within National Highways of environmental sustainability and achieving our Net Zero Plan.

Your new role

Would you like to join our Energy and Sustainability team? As Estates Net Zero Project Lead you will be working as part of the team responsible for delivering the Corporate Carbon KPI, which has a target to reduce our corporate carbon emissions by 75% by 2025. Part of this role will be further developing and implementing a carbon management strategy involving projects across the organisation to ensure National Highways achieves Net Zero Carbon for Corporate emissions by 2030.

Delivering the carbon management strategy will involve collaborative work with colleagues across the organisation, to identify carbon reduction initiatives, develop the projects and then manage and action them. To do this, the ability to ensure strategies are aligned across the organisation is critical along with developing and maintaining important stakeholder relationships.

What you’ll be leading on

  • Responsible for developing and delivering energy and water efficiency projects across the National Highways estate, following the Carbon Management Strategy, including leading on the depot greening programme.
  • Further develop the Electric Vehicle charging point strategy - project managing the installation of charge points across the National Highways estate, supporting the switch to a fully EV operational and business fleet.
  • Identify opportunities across the estate for carbon reduction innovation – utilising new technologies to improve efficiencies and deliver against the Corporate Carbon KPI and Net Zero Plan.
  • Provide specialist energy, carbon and environmental sustainability advice to colleagues across the directorate and wider organisation.
  • Complete a programme of energy audits across the National Highways estate with recommendation reports to drive further energy and water efficiencies. Instigate subsequent projects.
  • Collaboration with key stakeholders across the business who are key to National Highways achieving Net Zero for Corporate Carbon by 2030, as well as achieving the targets set out in the Corporate Carbon KPI – providing support where required.

To be successful you’ll need

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant environmental subject/relevant formal training, plus several years relevant experience.
  • Experience of developing and delivering a programme of works where the focus is on energy, water, and carbon reduction. Ability to clearly evidence carbon targets and activities achieved is important.
  • Ability to complete comprehensive building energy and water audits, with written recommendation reports.
  • Knowledge of the UK energy, carbon and water supply industries and their reporting requirements.
  • Experience of managing relationships with multiple stakeholders and evidence of skills to influence relationships for positive outcomes..
