This post will have a base in Peterborough or Aberdeen. JNCC has adopted a hybrid working approach, allowing colleagues to benefit from time in the office, with the flexibility also to work from home. Employees are expected to work from our office base or at external meetings or events for 1 – 2 days a month as a minimum, this will vary by team and the exact balance will depend on the nature of your role. Post Background: 

JNCC’s core purpose is to provide scientific advice for nature conservation and recovery across the UK and internationally. The recent focus on nature protection and recovery for tackling climate change at COP27 and ambitions of COP15 mean that JNCC’s work continues to grow in scale and importance, with an increasing external profile to match.

We are looking for an experienced manager with expertise in sustainable operations to work closely with the Head of Organisational Development. You will lead the project to achieve ISO14001 accreditation and other initiatives that support the continuous improvement of the sustainable way that the organisation is run. 

This is a new role for JNCC, so although there are key outcomes you will have the opportunity to innovate and advise on the next steps. 

Job description

Post Duties 

Key responsibilities will include:

•    Review current practices against the ISO14001 expectations and provide a gap analysis and project plan including targets and milestones for achieving the accreditation and beyond towards being an exemplar in this field.

•    Refresh the JNCC Environmental Policy in line with best practice.

•    Provide regular reports to the executive leadership team and quarterly to the JNCC Audit and Risk Assurance Committee, as well as the sustainability section of the Annual Report and Accounts.

•    Audit JNCC’s environmental impact and create a sustainable operations plan to complement the new JNCC Strategy ‘Together for Nature 2023-2030’.

•    Advise the Head of Organisational Development on simplifying processes and ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

•    Develop an understanding of the impact of hybrid working on sustainable operations and provide advice to the Executive Leadership Team.

•    Work with counterparts in Quay House (Natural England, Defra, Environment Agency and HM Passport Office) to build a green community hub, initiate sustainable and climate friendly activities and practices and collectively work with the Defra Group Property Agency on environmental issues.

•    To be a proactive lead member of the JNCC Greening Group and link up with the other tenants in Quay House, Peterborough and Inverdee House, Aberdeen.

•    To help drive sustainability into staff culture and the importance of this in the conduct of JNCC business.

•    Provide an introduction to sustainability within the induction for new staff and provide training as required to all staff.

Leave entitlement
