Protesters against the Corrib gas project have complained to the Garda Ombudsman about their treatment by gardai.
‘‘The guards are everywhere and we have submitted a number of complaints about them to the Garda Ombudsman, including some video evidence of their treatment of protesters,†said Terence Conway, a spokesman for Shell to Sea, which opposes the development.
An extra 300 gardai, two Irish naval vessels and the garda water unit were drafted into north Mayo ten days ago to coincide with the arrival of the Solitaire pipe-laying ship in Broadhaven Bay. Protesters in kayaks had attempted to lock on to the vessel, which is due to lay 83 kilometres of underwater pipes to bring gas from the Corrib field.
